2020年度入学典礼
2020年9月4日，四位本科生与2020级新生分享了自己的大学学习生活经验，希望能给学弟学妹们提供有益的建议，帮助他们尽快适应大学的学习生活。
郭沅鑫
来自理工学院、学勤书院的郭沅鑫与大家分享了他的大学体验，“我们的大学不但鼓励我们去探索，还为我们提供了各种平台和机会。实习、科研、交流、社交，无论你想做什么，都能在大学里找到一席之地。希望若干年后，当你回忆起在大学，你们的眼睛会闪烁着喜悦的光芒；当你们提起母校的名字时，你们的脸上会洋溢出自豪的表情。”

In the past two years, I have got a taste of all forms of university life, and I would love to share a few experiences with you.
The first point that I would like to make is about exploration. College years is the crucial period for experiencing new things, and luckily, our university encourages exploration and provides various platforms and myriad chances for it. Internships, research, exchange programs, all kinds of social activities, whatever you are aiming for, you can always find your spot. I myself started my first internship at Shenzhen Research Institute of Big Data this summer as a research intern supervised by Prof. Tom Luo. As a pure math student, I was good with abstract concepts in mathematics, yet I found it difficult to model real life scenarios. After a three-month training project and with the help of my supervisor, now I can formulate concrete problems with mathematical language and write codes to implement them. Looking back at the process, I have gained skills that I had never expected to acquire. Besides research, I am extending my orbit even further – I am currently a member of the management team of the university coffee shop, and meanwhile an undergraduate student teaching fellow. Compared to the day when I first stepped into this university, life has unfolded itself as in a kaleidoscope.
The second point I would like to make is about action. Taking proactive moves is never as easy as it may sound, especially when we are tempted to procrastinate and hesitate. I remember last year when I took the course Stochastic Process, the instructor of the course, Prof. Jim Dai, noticed me and asked if I wanted to do some research with him. I was, in fact, scared at the moment, because I barely had any relevant knowledge. But more importantly, I was afraid to fail his expectations. I declined the invitation at the beginning, as many of you would not believe, due to my lack of courage. But I regretted it almost immediately. I wrote an email to Prof. Dai, explained my concerns, expressed my interest, and requested to join his research team. It turned out that, although the process was quite a struggle, I learned much more than I expected from it. I will not say that chances are left for those that are fully prepared, but rather for those who are willing to grasp the chances. From that day on, I started to cherish every chance that I could reach. The undergraduate teaching fellow spot, the vacancy of a PhD course, and even the opportunity of speaking here at this very moment, all of these would not have been possible if I did not choose to take action. So please, do make your moves before it is too late.
Last but not least, do maintain a positive attitude. University life could be stressful, but no matter what kind of setbacks you are experiencing, make sure you find chances to relax and adjust yourselves. To be frank, my own research did not go smooth. The first paper that I wrote for a conference was rejected for the first time last spring, and was rejected the second time just recently. I have experienced disappointment and frustration, and questioned whether research is the right thing for me. But at the end of the day, instead of letting negative emotions getting the better of me, I’d treat myself with a good meal, or an excursion downtown, or simply a good night’s sleep. Only if you maintain a positive attitude can you fully adapt to university life.

I’ve asked myself what I wish I had known as a freshman. The answer is, everything. Please, Tell me everything. From “Oh What if I cannot understand the lectures in English” to “What if I have tried my best and the outcome is nothing but a disappointment”, From “Will I fit the student club I tend to join” to“Will there be anyone who really understands me”.
So today, I want to first share with you, the Rule of thumb, Don’t panic. You may know nothing, or already something. But it all doesn’t matter. There are things you don’t know, and situations you’ve never managed before. Yet one day, you will figure them out naturally. Then maybe you’ll say, okay, stay calm. Yet I still don’t know what to do next.
And here comes my second point. Do the next right thing. Nobody knows what’s coming tomorrow. So, Instead of planing a perfect plan. Why not living our lives today. I used to schedule my 4 years precisely. But COVID-19 stopped all the clocks. Last semester, I should have been taking language exams or doing my intern in Shenzhen. However, I was stuck at home, seeing my plans disturbed one by one and feeling like the Domino was starting to run. So I had to decide if I couldn’t predict the future, I might just accomplish the current things to the fullest. I kept regular exercise and sleep period, which made me healthy and energetic. The social-distancing time became enjoyable and fulfilling. Now you see, I stand here, fully equipped for the new semester. I have not drawn up anything. What I have done is just the next right thing.
Finally, there is another most necessary point. Enjoy yourself. Working hard is important. But it goes beyond books, you may need clubs, friends, hobbies, relationships and even adventures. Cause You’re stepping into a university that integrates the East n the West, cultivates talents and embraces diversity. Cause You’re stepping in a time that is inclusive, innovative and vigorous. Cause You’re stepping in a city that’s been called a “miracle” since 40 years ago. Try new things. Explore the young city. There are tons of opportunities awaiting you.
马若菲
来自数据科学学院、学勤书院的马若菲认为“大学生应当跨出舒适区，勇于接受挑战，不惧失败。这不仅仅关于个人成长，也是在当今时代抓住潮流迎接挑战的必需。尽可能利用学校资源，探索个人发展道路。同时也需保持好奇心，不放弃对未知的探索。”

As a senior student, I would like to share several pieces of my personal experiences with you.
The first thing is to take risks and to embrace failure. Try something you are not good at. If you are afraid of presentations, take courses where presentations are required; if you are afraid of maths, take one or two math courses. Your weakness might one day become your strength, only if you dare to take the first step.
The second thing is to make the most use of university resources. Like many of my peers, I never limit myself to my major and take courses in computer science, mathematics, and humanities. I dig deeper into subjects out of pure interest through general education. They are conducive to my growth as a whole person. I also participated in student clubs. For example, Statistical Alliance holds academic activities, like review classes before exams. In Shimmer, a charitable student organization, we organized voluntary teaching in Sichuan. Those activities pushed me further into self-improvement.
Here comes my last experience--stay curious and keep learning. I'm refering to the self-motivate, life-long learning. Driven by my research intresets, I joined professors’ research groups when I was a sophomore. I learned much from the research that is out of the scope of regular courses. I would like to share an interesting insight from reinforcement learning--exploitation of past experiences and exploration of new experiences are equally important. In other words, though an attempt to the unknown may drive us away from visible rewards, there’s no reason that we even refuse to give it a shot. Stay curious, so you will never forget to explore; keep learning, so you will never fail to explore.

Being a freshman marks a new chapter in life. I want to share three pieces of personal experience with you after thinking about what advice would have been most useful to me during my first year. That is be brave to reinvent yourself, do not hesitate to seek help, and think beyond your own passion and goal.
Be brave to reinvent yourself. Being a freshman means a clean state and a great opportunity to be whoever you want to be. From today on, you are provided with unimaginable opportunities to discover your interests and potentials. Choose the subjects that intrigue you and those interdisciplinary courses that benefit your knowledge pool and also your critical thinking and learning ability. Moreover, CUHK-Shenzhen has made many efforts in offering various exchange or summer school programs in cooperation with partner universities. My educational experiences of summer programs in LSE and NUS or extracurricular activities such as volunteering and working as a student teaching assistant offered me valuable chances to reevaluate and rebuild myself.
Secondly, do not hesitate to seek help. The transition from high school to university can be confusing and overwhelming. On the way to pursue your interest and goal, please think of failure as a way to learn more. And I can assure you one thing, there is no shortage of help in CUHK-Shenzhen. For me, I am grateful that the professors, lecturers, and TAs always inspire us to take control of our own learning experiences. Talking with parents is another effective way for me. Maybe they are not experts in the fields, but their support and understanding has been the strongest backing, and communicating with them has helped me reflect on myself.
Finally, think beyond your own passion and goal. What we can gain here is more than personal enrichment. Life is never just about striving for an excellent GPA and a better career path. We are expected to discover the world in our whole lifetime. We are expected to be equipped with curiosity and the values to thrive in a world where knowledge and technology is advancing. We are expected to inherit the world and proactively contribute to a better world for the generation to come. I recalled what Prof. Zhong Nanshan, top epidemiologist in China and a former member of the CUHK-Shenzhen Governing Board said at the Graduation Ceremony this May, “We should not only contribute to our country but also have a spirit of internationalism to love and protect all humanity”.
2019年度入学典礼
陈雅宁
来自理工学院、逸夫书院的陈雅宁曾在2019年度入学典礼上与新生分享了三条个人经验。
第一条是抱着开放的心态，主动拥抱新事物。第二条建议是要激发自己的热情和兴趣，在大学里找到自己的目标。第三条建议是对身边的人常怀感恩之心，尤其是要感恩父母。

大学是人生的全新阶段，需要我们调整心态尽快适应。跟高中不同，在这里分数并不是唯一的评判标准。在大学里，拥有各种各样才能的同学会在不同的舞台上闪闪发光。当我刚进入大学的时候，我不太清楚应该追求些什么，也不知道怎么好好发挥自己的能力。因此，我广泛地选修各种课程，跟不同领域的教授们交流。在假期里，我在许多不同行业和部门实习。我很感谢这些宝贵的经验，让我终于明白自己的兴趣所在和未来的方向。生活并不是竞赛，因此我们很难界定什么样的人生才算成功。我们需要找到自己的激情和目标，这才是幸福人生的关键。我真诚地希望，无论当下有什么计划，你都会充分利用大学提供的资源。
2018年度入学典礼
余书华
来自理工学院、逸夫书院的余书华曾在2018年度入学典礼上发言，向新生们分享了自己大学的心路历程。
他坦言，大学之路，因人而异；前路漫漫，你们应当“上下而求索”。想清楚你们为什么来到这所大学，你们有什么理想目标，然后砥砺前行，有所实现。

我在江西的一个小乡镇长大，所以我从小就向往着更广阔的天地。而我们学校的定位就是要成为一个开放、多元、富有创造性的国际化大学，这一点深深地吸引了我。而在过去的三年里，我切实地感受到了大学带给我的视野上的蜕变。我上了很多世界知名教授亲自教授的课，让我印象深刻的有学术副校长罗智泉教授的AP课程，他是加拿大皇家科学院院士，亲自给我们授课讲解数学分析，严谨而有富有启发性；还有图灵奖得主John Hopcroft教授的离散数学课，已经是耄耋之年的他依然精力充沛、诲人不倦。大学丰富的暑期课程同样让我获益匪浅，我有幸在剑桥大学体验到了不同的文化、思想，以及剑桥绵延千年的学术传统。这些都让我感受到，大学这个平台给我们的不仅仅是人生事业的准备，更是人生视野的提升。

陈嘉喆
来自经管学院、逸夫书院的陈嘉喆在2017年度入学典礼上发言。她强调，学生的成长也是大学的发展。
“丰富我们大学经历的不仅仅是修读核心课程或专业课程，更重要的是在多样化的活动中进行创新。我们的想法，提出的问题，所做的改变，创下的记录，都将成为大学的一部分。”

No matter what you were before, here, at CUHK-Shenzhen, you are given opportunities to pursue better selves. Actually, I tried to figure out some typical stories that can demonstrate my growth, but I eventually failed. Because during the past two years, every trifle, every success and every failure that I experienced gradually accumulated and contributed to my growth.
I would never imagine I would be a student representative to speak here, I would never expect I were able to organize many big events like The Voice of CUHK-Shenzhen, to take part in different business competitions, to study abroad at UCLA and Cambridge University… All these opportunities of learning and growing start from saying Yes to them. There was a time when I felt unconfident in dealing with new challenges, and I was not brave enough to step out of my comfort zone. When I was a freshman, I was nervous in making new friends, was passive in some extracurricular activities, and even didn’t dare to ask someone to group with me for a group project simply because I feared being refused. Fear of failure, however, is the most powerful obstacle that holds us back. Later on, I found out that at CUHK-Shenzhen, there are always many motivators that keep pushing me out of my comfort zone. Our fellow students, they are so excellent, it is the way they live, the way they challenge themselves, and the way they perceive the world that inspire and motivate me to step forward. For our teachers and professors, it is their patience, tolerance, and considerate care that give us more room for trial and error, encouraging us to inquire, to try, and to challenge. I am so thankful for the university for urging me to step out of my comfort zone and to grow up.
